Chapter Seventeen
Gemma
âGemma, look!â
After carefully packing a few new dresses I made into their garment bags, I turn to see Hazel posing in a knit halter tank top that Iâm still working on.
The sight of Hazel posing in my knit halter tank top with pink and purple glitter from her princess t-shirt peeking from behind makes me wish I could capture this moment and put it somewhere so safe that no accident will ever threaten to take it away. âYou look amazing!â
Hazel puts one hand behind her head and the other on her hiked-up waist, and I clap and cheer as she turns my bedroom floor into her own mini catwalk.
She and I have been spending a lot of time together since they put Samâs uncle in hospice, and because of all the back-and-forth traveling, I offer to help out with Hazel when Asher is on the road.
âIf youâll hand me that tank top, Iâll bag it up, and we can go to the boutique.â I look down at the four other black garment bags lying on my bed with the other clothes I made.
Olivia invited me to bring them down to the boutique so she could put them on a rack and sell them for me. Sheâs been over the moon about them from the pictures Iâve sent, but I hope sheâll still like them when she sees what Iâve made in person. Itâs taken me weeks to design and make each piece, but Iâve enjoyed every second of it.
My hands seem to move out of instinct when making clothes, and ideas flow in and out of my head like Iâve been thinking about them for years. I know it must be some faint connection to my past, but I still hate that I canât remember anything.
At this point, itâs hard to say if I ever will, but I suppose it wouldnât be the worst thing in the world if I donât. Iâm happy right now, and I didnât even need my memories for that to happen. I needed my dad, my hobbies, my new friends, Hazel⦠and Asher, of course.
âHere you go,â Hazel wiggles out of the top and carefully hands it to me, watching me store it on a hanger in the last garment bag.
I zip up the bag and grab the hangers of all five in one hand. âLetâs go!â
Hazel bounds after me as I take her down the hall to the kitchen, where Dad enjoys a fresh glass of milk and a turkey sandwich over this morningâs paper. âHi, Mr. Carter!â
âWell, hey there, Hazel,â Dad greets her with a warm smile before looking up at me. âGoing to the boutique?â
I nod as an air of nervous excitement hangs overhead. âOlivia thinks theyâll sell, but weâll see.â
Dad sets his sandwich on the small stoneware plate in front of him and pushes out of his chair. When he crosses over to me, he places gentle hands on my shoulders and gives me an assuring look. âTheyâll be flying off the racks, honey.
